How these countdowns work

Every page on this list answers the same question — "how many days until…?" — with a number that is always current. The big figure on each page is the count of whole calendar days between today and the next occurrence of the holiday, and underneath it a live clock ticks off the hours, minutes, and seconds. Leave a page open and it keeps counting; bookmark it and it will be right when you come back, because the date is worked out fresh from the calendar rules every time the page loads.

Fixed dates and floating dates

Some holidays sit on the same date forever: Christmas is always December 25, Halloween is always October 31. Others float, pinned to a weekday instead of a date — Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, Mother's Day is the second Sunday of May, Memorial Day is the last Monday of May. Easter floats the most of all: its date comes from a formula worked out in the early church, based on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox, so it can land anywhere from late March to late April. Each holiday page explains its own rule, so you can see exactly why next year's date is what it is.

What happens when the day arrives

On the holiday itself, the countdown gives way to a simple "It's today!" message that lasts all day. The morning after, the page quietly starts counting toward the following year's date — no updates, no maintenance, nothing for you to reset. If the day you're waiting for isn't a holiday at all — a wedding, a flight, a due date — the countdown builder makes a live countdown to any date you choose, with a link you can share.
